Brij Sone Bagh
The film
Why we love it
"Five folk-art villas at the wild edge of tiger country"
Bandhavgarh is tiger country in the truest sense — a compact reserve in the Vindhya hills that consistently ranks among the best places in India to actually see a wild tiger. Brij Sone Bagh sits right on its doorstep. The hotel describes itself as being "Set on the edge of the iconic Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh", and that edge-of-the-forest feeling runs through everything: you fall asleep to the rustle of leaves and distant calls, and head out at first light on a jeep through the misty sal forest. This is a small, low-key retreat rather than a grand resort — just five villas tucked into the green near Tala village — and that intimacy is rather the point.
Five villas, five folk arts
What sets Sone Bagh apart is how thoughtfully its rooms are put together. There are five villas, and each is a "gentle nod to Bandhavgarh's untamed beauty and rich culture" — every one themed on a native animal of the park and a traditional craft of Madhya Pradesh. The Bagh (tiger) villa layers earthy tones and hand-blocked Bagh-print motifs; the Vanar (monkey) villa is dressed in 4,000-year-old Dhokra brasswork from Betul; Hiranya (deer) is painted in vivid Gond art from Umaria; Gaj (elephant) carries the soft Mandana patterns village women draw to welcome guests; and Mayur (peacock) comes alive with Papier Mache craft from Ujjain. Each opens onto an open sit-out looking into the trees. If you care about a sense of place — art with a story, made by named regional artisans — few small lodges do it this deliberately.
The safari, of course
The reason most people come is the tiger, and the lodge builds its days around the reserve. Its Tiger Safari Experience promises an "all-access safari through the enchanting forests of Bandhavgarh," sharing the wilderness with leopards, deer and a chorus of birdlife. Between drives you can slow down over a Morning Hi Tea at the Safari Lounge as the sun lifts over the treeline, or take a Baiga Village Nature Walk to read the forest the way its oldest inhabitants do.
Eating with the forest
Dining leans hard into farm-and-forest, which suits the setting. Their Farm to Table experience walks you through the property's organic garden to pluck vegetables and herbs before the chef cooks them; a Poolside Dining menu turns romantic after dark; and Under the Jamun Tree is a bush dinner deep in a lantern-lit clearing, with the Baiga community drumming, dancing and telling tribal folklore around a bonfire. There is a restaurant and bar on site, and breakfast is included.
Culture on the doorstep
Sone Bagh treats the surrounding tribal culture as part of the experience rather than a backdrop. You can join a Tribal Market (haat) visit in Tala on Wednesdays, try your hand at block printing with local craftspeople, or cook Kodo millet and foraged greens over a mud chulha on the Tribal Kitchen Trail with the Baigas. It is the kind of programming that turns a two-night tiger trip into something you actually remember for the people, not just the sightings.
The verdict
This isn't a polished five-star machine, and it doesn't pretend to be — it's an intimate, art-filled hideaway for travellers who want their wildlife with a strong sense of place. Come for the tigers; stay for the craft, the garden dinners and the quiet.
