Boat the Narmada from Ahilyabai's fort
Two nights inside a working fort above the ghats, full board, with the river at sunrise and again at sunset.
Ahilyabai Holkar took over the Holkar kingdom in 1767 and ruled it for twenty-eight years from this small Narmada town. From here she rebuilt the Kashi Vishwanath temple at Varanasi, restored Somnath, and laid ghats and rest-houses across India.
Her fort is still in the family, and it still works as a home. You eat what the kitchen has cooked that day, and you go out on the river twice: once into the sunset with tea aboard, once at first light, or across on the ferry to Navdatodi.

Ahilya Fort

Nineteen rooms spread through six old buildings inside the fort walls, above the ghats where the town's handloom weavers still work. Meals are a set menu from the fort's own kitchen, taken together, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
There is a pool and there are games, and laundry is done for you. Maheshwar itself is one of India's great handloom towns and the weaving sheds are a short walk down.

About ninety kilometres from Indore. Meals are a set menu rather than a card, which is part of how the house runs. The boats go out weather permitting; the Narmada decides.
