Samroha is perched on a cliff directly above Athirappilly Falls, the cascade its own website calls the "Niagara of India", with the Chalakudy River running below. One of five Niraamaya Retreats scattered from Kovalam to Kohima, the whole property is arranged so the sound of moving water follows you from the lounge bar to the yoga mat. It is also, unusually for a retreat at this level, pet friendly by design.
Rooms that climb from garden to river
The spread runs from 425 sq ft Superior Rooms with river views, through 475 sq ft Deluxe Rooms whose French windows frame partial waterfall views, to 725 sq ft Luxury Cottages with proper living rooms. Honeymooners get 725 sq ft Premium Waterfront Villas opening onto private plunge pools. At the top sit two Presidential options: a 1,040 sq ft suite with heated jacuzzi, private spa room and a river-facing balcony, and a 1,200 sq ft villa with its own pool, dry kitchen and spa room.
"The award-winning Niraamaya Spa offers personalised healing programmes guided by expert doctors, therapists, yogis, and culinary specialists."
That is the group's own framing of its wellness pedigree, and at Samroha it plays out as river-facing yoga, guided meditation and Ayurvedic therapies with the falls as backdrop.
Falls, forest and the long way round
Cafe Samsara handles all-day dining across Kerala, Pan Asian and global menus, while the Essence lounge bar keeps the waterfall in view. The retreat arranges private treks into the Sholayar rainforest, canoeing on the Chalakudy, riverside dinners under the stars, and cultural evenings of Theyyam, Mohiniyattam and Kalaripayattu. Cochin International Airport and Chalakudy Railway Station are the listed arrival points; Thumboormuzhi Dam and Valparai make easy outings. In our view the falls alone justify the detour.
