In Sufism, qayaam is the highest station on the inner journey: first sukoon, the unshakeable peace, and in time the experience of unity with everything. The retreat took the word for its name.
You come up a country road through forest and village hamlets, then walk the last stretch through pastures or take the jeep. From the verandas the whole Vale of Kashmir opens out: shikaras between the houseboats, floating gardens, and the Hazratbal shrine reflected on the far shore. The guided walk goes uphill through apple and cherry orchards to the Rishi village and its shrine.
Seven places to sleep on the ridge. Four free-standing villas of 737 square feet, each with a 380-square-foot bedroom and a veranda giving 180 degrees of lake and mountain, named for Sufi poetesses and mystics: Habba Khatoon, Lal Ded, Rumi and Rabia. Three suites of 647 square feet, Hafiz, Shamas and Mahjoor, add a sitting and study area.
The buildings are cedar, glass and stone, backed by the Zabarwan hills.

Suite
One of three suites (Hafiz, Shamas, Mahjoor): 647 sq ft with a 325 sq ft bedroom, 130 sq ft bathroom and 192 sq ft veranda, plus a family-residence style sitting and study area. King-size bed and lake views; one pair of suites interconnects as a two-bedroom suite for families.
Villa
One of four free-standing villas (Habba Khatoon, Lal Ded, Rumi, Rabia): 737 sq ft in all, with a 380 sq ft bedroom, 165 sq ft bathroom and 192 sq ft veranda giving 180-degree views of Dal Lake and the mountains. King-size bed, Kashmiri carpets, deodar woodcarving, Bukhari wood-burning stove.

The final approach is a short walk through pastures or the retreat's own jeep, so pack accordingly. Breakfast and one main meal a day, lunch or dinner, are in the price, and so are all taxes. Morning yoga is 45 minutes and pitched at beginners.
The house will put a car and driver on any of the days below, priced per car rather than per person, so the figure is the same whether two of you go or four.
