Kalbelia dancers by firelight in the Thar

The Manganiyars do not perform, exactly. They continue.

For thirteen centuries these hereditary musicians have sung for the desert courts of western Rajasthan, fathers teaching sons the same ragas that once opened royal durbars. The kingdoms went. The songs did not. Tonight the court is a circle of lanterns in the Great Thar, and the durbar is you.
