Amet Haveli

Why we love it

"Twenty-two lake-facing rooms in a haveli built between 1734 and 1752, with a courtyard pool and the Ambrai restaurant on the water, Lake Pichola, Udaipur"

Amet Haveli was built during the rule of Maharana Jagat Singh II of Udaipur, between 1734 and 1752. He also built Jag Niwas, now the Lake Palace, and the stone and materials for that island palace were ferried from the open ground beside the haveli. Successive Maharanas used the house as an evening leisure palace. It was later awarded to Dodiya Sardar Singhji and became known as Dodiya ki Haveli, then around 1783 Maharana Bheem Singh of Mewar granted it to Rawat Pratap Singh of Amet. The Amet family still lives in the private wing.

There are 22 lake facing rooms: eight heritage suites, eight super deluxe and six heritage deluxe. The haveli has a Badi Mahal, or garden palace, one of only three in Udaipur with the Lake Palace and City Palace, all by the same architect; Raja Ravi Varma painted his portrait of Maharana Pratap there. A pool sits in the courtyard. Ambrai, the open air restaurant on the bank of Lake Pichola, has been running since 1998 and looks across to Jagdish Temple, Gangaur Ghat, the City Palace and Jag Mandir.
