Why we love it

"The 1890s summer palace of the Maharajas of Balrampur above Nainital, redesigned by a European architect and now a heritage hotel"

Balrampur House was once the summer palace of the Maharajas of Balrampur, and now runs as a heritage resort in Nainital.

It was built in the 1890s and redesigned by the European architect Mortimer, which is why the house reads more like a French chateau than a hill station bungalow, set against the Kumaon hills.

What guests actually do here is slower than the architecture suggests. Mornings come with the scent of pine and sunlit gardens to walk through, and the views run out across the Kumaon range. In winter the house leans into the snow, with snow view rooms and open gardens for watching it come down. Beyond the rooms there is dining, a set of experiences, and the grounds are used for weddings and events.
