Brij Atmanya

Some hill hotels shout their views at you. Brij Atmanya does the opposite: it settles you into a hillside above Bhowali, in the heart of what the hotel calls the Kumaon Lake District, and then goes quiet. The name is the whole idea. As the property explains it, *Atmanya* means 'to connect with oneself', and everything here, from the extended sit-out decks to the guided forest walks, is arranged to make that easy.

A house that faces the trees

The hotel's own description sets the tone, "a sanctuary crafted from stone, wood, and countless stories", and the rooms follow through. Nearly every category comes with a sit-out deck, terrace or balcony, so the mountain is part of the room rather than something you go and look at. There are garden-facing and hill-facing options, and the larger Nandakot suites run to 700 and 800 square feet with private terraces. It is the kind of place where the best hours are the unplanned ones: coffee on the deck, the rustle of leaves, nowhere in particular to be.

Kumaoni flavours from the garden

Dining leans on provenance. The kitchen draws on the property's own Natural Herb & Spice garden, and the hotel frames its food as "a delightful fusion of Kumaoni specialties with Indian and international palates in mind." The bar is the evening's anchor, warm light on wooden decor, a drink, and a view of wherever your walk took you that day.

Walk, don't rush

This is a walking, wandering sort of place, and the roster of experiences is genuinely long. Trails run out in every direction, the hike to Kainchi Dham (Neem Karoli Baba), Tagore Top, Mahesh Khan through pine, oak and rhododendron, Jhandidhar Devi temple, Gagar, Paritaal. Closer to home there's a tea-garden tour with tasting, an orchard visit, guided bird watching and jungle walks, forest bathing, cycling, and a sunrise breakfast set up at altitude. Families are well looked after too, with a kids' cooking class, pine-cone painting and an open-air theatre.

Quiet luxury, wellness edge

The seasonal offers tell you who the hotel is really for. A Women's Wellness Getaway built on yoga and spa; 'Brij Bespoke Romance' for couples; 'Into the Wild' for the safari-and-campfire crowd; a 'Winter Escape' of jungle picnics and bonfires. The verdict

Bhowali sits a little apart from Nainital's busier lakefront, and that distance is the point. Atmanya trades the crowds for forest, garden and calm, keeps the scale intimate, and puts real thought into food and time outdoors. If your idea of a hill holiday is a deck, a walk, a good dinner and no agenda, this reads as an easy yes.
