Wash and walk the elephants at Dera Amer
Two nights under canvas on 180 acres of Aravalli scrub, all meals in. Twelve guests at most.
Laxmi and Rangmala were taken off city work in 2006 and 2009. At Dera Amer nobody rides them. You wash them, feed them and walk out with them into the scrub, and the safaris here go on foot for the same reason.
The family bought these 180 acres in 1981 when it was neglected scrubland, turned down the developers who wanted it, and spent three decades putting the wilderness back. It is now a sanctuary on the edge of the Aravalli forest, and the camp takes twelve adults at most.

Dera Amer
Six canvas tents in colonial safari style, set well apart in the scrub, with Cawnpore cots and planter's chairs copied from Raj-era models and made by local artisans, each with its own shower room. No more than one family or two couples are in camp at a time.
The swimming pool is built from local materials and filtered by plants, and its overflow waters the jungle around it. Meals are served outdoors from an organic vegetable plot worked by villagers and camp staff. The people who run it come from the surrounding villages, some since the camp opened, and it funds the junior school nearby.

Good to know
Twelve adults in camp at most, and no more than one family or two couples at a time. There is no elephant riding here and there never has been; the safaris go on foot. Jaipur airport is the nearest, about an hour away at Kukas, beyond Amer.
