The Grand Dragon Ladakh stands in the heart of the ancient city of Leh, on P. Namgyal Road in Sheynam, and describes itself as the only five star hotel in Leh and one of the highest luxury hotels in Ladakh.
The setting does most of the work. Outside are the mountain views of the old kingdom, and inside are rooms and suites finished in a mix of contemporary and traditional style with Himalayan outlooks.
The rooms are graded from the Premier Heritage Room, the most spacious of the luxury rooms, with a Nespresso machine, larger bathroom and in some cases a balcony, through the Luxury Room, which takes two adults and two children and turns its floor seating into a bed at night, up through the Heritage Suite, Family Suite, Luxury Suite and Dragon Suite. There is a spa, a gym and a salon.

Founded in 1978, a few years after Ladakh first opened to travellers, and now stewarded by Ladakhis, this slow-travel base sits in Ayu village in the Indus Valley, built in traditional stone-and-mud style. Stay in a mud hut, a chalet or the duplex suite. Televisions have been removed from every room; a shared set waits in the Sarai Hall, which tells you what the place is for.

A contemporary hotel on Old Leh Road, built the old Ladakhi way: thick, buttressed walls of compressed earth blocks made on site. Leh's main market is 350 metres away, Leh Palace just over a kilometre. Juniper, the ground-floor restaurant, works Ladakhi and Tibetan flavours through its menus, and the bathroom floors are heated, which, in a Leh winter, is no small thing.
