Walk Churu's painted havelis from Malji ka Kamra
Two nights in a 1920s frescoed haveli, with a guided walk through the painted town and a jeep out into the Thar.
A Churu merchant called Malji Kothari, pulse doctor and devotee of Indo-European architecture, built this house in the 1920s and called it simply his kamra, his room. The name outlasted him. Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner stayed here on his journeys through the Thar.
It is painted the colour of new leaves and covered wall to ceiling in frescoes, Italianate plasterwork running into Shekhawati mural work, with a painted steam train crossing one ceiling. The restoration took twenty years in lime plaster and mineral pigment, and where the original murals had not survived the gaps were left rather than invented.

Malji ka Kamra
Rooms come in two kinds. Heritage Rooms keep their original murals on every wall and ceiling, with rosewood four-posters and patterned stone floors. Haveli Rooms are quieter and larger, opening onto courtyard balconies or straight onto the lawn, with handmade king beds.
Spice Court on the ground floor is the family's own kitchen, purely vegetarian, serving from breakfast through to dinner.

Good to know
Just over a mile from Churu railway station, about three hours by road from Jaipur and five from Delhi. The kitchen is purely vegetarian. All non-alcoholic drinks are in the price, and so is a glass of wine if you take the sundowner on the dunes.
