Nimmu House is an eco resort at ten thousand feet in the traditional village of Nimmo, about forty five minutes from Leh and reachable by taxi from the town.
The stay splits between timeless heritage rooms in the house itself and designed glamping tents, so the same property covers both a heritage stay and camping without leaving the village. There is a yogashala on site and Ladakhi cooking in the dining room.
Its position makes it a practical base rather than only a retreat. The house calls itself an anchor spot for trekkers heading into the Himalayan paths, and equally for travellers who want the cultural sites of the region. It takes couples, families, groups of friends and solo travellers, and runs themed stays around family, wellness, trekking, culture and yoga.
Above the Indus near Leh, the Namgyal family's home of two centuries takes guests, a monk on the top floor, the royal museum, and three villas in the apricot orchard.

Founded in 1978, a few years after Ladakh first opened to travellers, and now stewarded by Ladakhis, this slow-travel base sits in Ayu village in the Indus Valley, built in traditional stone-and-mud style. Leh's main market is 350 metres away, Leh Palace just over a kilometre. Juniper, the ground-floor restaurant, works Ladakhi and Tibetan flavours through its menus, and the bathroom floors are heated, which, in a Leh winter, is no small thing.
