HRH publishes no build date for The Aodhi. The history on its pages belongs to the fort above it. Rana Kumbha, who ruled Mewar from 1433 to 1468, is credited with thirty two of the eighty four fortresses that defended the kingdom, and Kumbhalgarh is his. Colonel James Tod wrote that it was impregnable to a native army. The hotel is one of the Royal Retreats of Historic Resort Hotels, the Udaipur company that also runs Shikarbadi and Fateh Bagh at Ranakpur.
There are 26 rooms, three of them deluxe suites, which HRH says recreate themes of jungle lore. They are built of local stone with crenellated parapets and round thatched pavilions, stepped down the slope to a pool cut into the hillside. Chowka is the multi cuisine restaurant, open from seven in the morning until half past ten at night. Chhapar is the coffee shop over the pool, Chopal the bar and Panghat the spa.
Dinner moves outdoors. The Angeethi lawns take up to 25, the poolside seats 40, and the Hill Top is the rough outdoor venue. Ranakpur is 55km away.
Fateh Safari Suites is a suite-only boutique property in the Aravalli Hills near Qila Kumbhalgarh, perched 1,100 m above sea level with views of Kumbhalgarh Fort and the Marwar plains. Four suite categories, several with jacuzzis or plunge-pool access, use locally quarried stone and hand-blocked textiles. A lobby-level restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating facing the fort.
