Why we love it

"Among the vines at the site of Sula's first winery"

Nashik is India's wine country and Sula is the name that claims the credit. The Source is the estate's own resort, built, they say, where the company's historic first winery stood, and billed as India's first heritage winery resort. The building looks the part: a grand cream villa with a red-tiled roof, arched verandas and a lotus-pond garden, backed by a wooded hill.

The rooms carry the names of famous wine regions and run from snug Vintage Rooms to a 1,150 sq ft suite with a soaking tub, plus stilted acacia-wood tree houses, one of which looks straight down the vine rows. A complimentary Sula winery tour and tasting comes with the stay, by the house's telling.

When you are not tasting, there are four restaurants on the estate, a temperature-controlled outdoor pool with jacuzzi, a spa and fitness centre, and bicycles for wandering the vineyards.

Rooms & rates

Vintage Room
Vintage Room

330 sq ft with garden or hill views. The house pitches these as its Tuscany-in-Nashik rooms, roomy enough for families. The photographs show sage-green walls, a cane-backed king bed and a pair of armchairs. Winery tour and tasting included.

Vintage Grand Room
Vintage Grand Room

A 400 sq ft step up with a separate living room and a garden-view bedroom. The house says these are among its most requested rooms. Winery tour and tasting included.

Courtyard Room
Courtyard Room

300 sq ft off the resort's cobbled courtyard, which does a fair impression of a European square with its vintage fountain and cafe chairs. Each room gets its own wicker swing, they say, and sits centrally in the resort.

Grand Cru
Grand Cru

400 sq ft with a sitting area and a large private balcony. Every piece of furniture was handpicked, per the house, and the photos of a green velvet sofa and sunny striped armchair rather back them up.

Tower Suite
Tower Suite

A 578 sq ft duplex in the resort's tower. White marble living floor and balcony below, king bedroom and bath above, with garden, Gangapur dam and mountain views by the house's telling.

Vineyard Suite
Vineyard Suite

A 1,000 sq ft suite the house calls its biggest, though its own Hermitage runs larger, with a large living room and a balcony the house recommends for a glass of wine at sunset.

Hermitage Suite
Hermitage Suite

1,150 sq ft on the second floor (no lift), with a grand balcony over vineyard, hills and lake, white marble bathroom and a soaking tub. The television lives in the living room.

Tree House Vineyard View
Tree House Vineyard View

270 sq ft on stilts with an unbroken line over the vines to the backwaters and Sahyadri hills, per the house. A four-poster in sheer netting and a private deck; the best seat in the house, they reckon.

Tree House Garden View
Tree House Garden View

The same 270 sq ft cabin, crafted in acacia wood by the house's own artisans by their telling, facing the gardens rather than the vines. Deck, bathrobes and all.
