Thengal Manor
Why we love it
"Five rooms with fireplaces in a 1929 Barooah family mansion where Assam's first daily newspaper was launched in 1935, 15 km from Jorhat"
Thengal House was built in 1929 by Rai Bahadur Siva Prasad Barooah to hold him, his brother Sashi Prasad Barooah and both families under one roof. At its fullest about a hundred people sat down to lunch and dinner here every day. On 12 August 1935 the first daily newspaper in Assamese, Dainik Batori, was launched from the house. An earthquake damaged it in 1943, and the larger 1950 earthquake drove the families out to Calcutta, Jorhat town and the tea gardens. It stood unused for thirteen years, and repairs ran from 1963 to 1965. The public asked for a museum, hospital, library or college; the family judged that a house built to be lived in should stay one.
There are four double Deluxe Rooms and one single Superior Room, each with attached dressing room and bath. Fireplaces are set in every bedroom and in the drawing and dining rooms, and the period furniture is still in place. The Restaurant serves Indian, Continental, Assamese and Bengali food. Outside are lawns with a fountain, a swimming pool and a baby pool, croquet and fishing on request. Across the road is Jalukonibari village, home to metal working artisans and master weavers.
