Every hotel in Udaipur promises a lake view. Udai Kothi put the water on the roof instead. Stand on the terrace at dusk and the boast feels earned: domes lit like lanterns, candlelit tables on a chequerboard floor, the green glow of the pool against the evening sky.
The address matters. Udai Kothi stands at Hanuman Ghat on Lake Pichola, a short and pleasant stroll from the heart of the old city. Close enough to wander in, far enough that the nights stay quiet.
The house
Inside, it is a modern hotel wearing traditional dress, and wearing it well. Sixty four rooms and suites, and the photographs do the bragging: jharokha balconies on the facade, painted ceilings, canopy beds and kilim rugs in the rooms, with the practical comforts of good WiFi, air conditioning and proper writing desks underneath. Dinner happens at Baro Masi, the house restaurant, and there is a spa for when the sightseeing catches up with you.
The rooms
Five room types climb from the generous Deluxe, with its king bed and soaking tub, to the Udai Suite, the largest and most exclusive of the lot: living area, dressing room, a balcony with a full lake view, plus a private plunge pool and a lake view jacuzzi of its own. In between, the Lake Suite does exactly what its name promises and the Garden Suite swaps water for green.
