Why we love it

"An 1800s Victorian palace in Baripada run by the 48th generation of the Bhanj dynasty, four to five hours from three state capitals"

The Belgadia Palace was built in the 1800s in Victorian style with elements of Georgian decor, and was designed to house visiting foreign dignitaries and guests of the royal family of Mayurbhanj. When the princely state merged into the Union of India it was titled a palace, and the family moved in as their primary residence.

It stands in the heritage town of Baripada in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, and the hotel describes it as a piece of Kalinga history. It sits four to five hours from the state capitals of Odisha, Bengal and Jharkhand, which makes it reachable from three directions.

The house is presented as a tropical art deco building refurbished with modern amenities, keeping its history as a haven for artists, with the Odia countryside around it. It is run by Maharajkumari Mrinalika and Akshita M Bhanj Deo, the forty eighth generation of the Bhanj dynasty that ruled Mayurbhanj.
