Rajmahal is not a palace that was turned into a hotel and emptied. The Royal Family still keep it as their primary residence, and the things on display are theirs: photographs, polo trophies, heirlooms, a 1950s Ford Thunderbird sitting where you can look at it.
It was built in 1729. For years it was home to Maharaja Sawai Man 'Jai' Singh and Maharani Gayatri Devi, who described it in A Princess Remembers as having 'charm and character and a pleasantly informal atmosphere'. Queen Elizabeth II and the late Duke of Edinburgh have both stayed. Some of the suites are named for the guests who used them, among them Jackie Kennedy, Lord Mountbatten and the Queen Elizabeth Suite.
There are thirteen rooms and suites in all, two of them Royal Apartments. Each mixes family heirlooms with modern pieces into what the house calls a perfect example of Indian Art Deco, and several carry real history: the Maharaja and Maharani suites were the private quarters of Sawai Man Singh II and his son Sawai Bhawani Singh, and the semi-circular upper room of the Palace Suite housed the British representative for Rajputana from 1821 until Independence.
Eating is done at The Colonnade or 51 Shades of Pink, between them covering Indian and international. The bar is polo-themed, and does cocktails alongside wines and spirits. Orient Occident can be taken over for an occasion. There is a spa, and an Art Deco pool set in the garden inside a ring of fountains.
The staff will arrange the city for you: guided tours of the royal residences, the City Palace, the markets, and polo matches when they are on. Jaipur itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal and the City Palace all close.

Sleeps 2, 640 to 880 sq ft, in the private quarters of Sawai Man Singh II and Sawai Bhawani Singh, entered through a private hall. The semi-circular upper room housed the British representative for Rajputana from 1821 to Independence; monochrome Mughal and European print.
Sleeps 2, 2,427 sq ft. The Maharajas' own suite: private entrance hall of curios, living area, separate bar, drawing room opening to a private terrace, and a private dining room for eight hung with portraits of Jaipur's Maharajas. Marble bathroom with bathtub, shower and twin basins.
1 king bed, sleeps 2, 2,628 sq ft, the largest suite at Rajmahal, with its own entrance. Bedroom, sitting, dressing and private dining rooms, service kitchen, enclosed veranda and plunge pool. Private butler and a complimentary chauffeur to and from Jaipur airport.
Down a lane in the old walled city, behind high gates, the Samode family's Jaipur townhouse hides a run of painted courtyards, frescoed halls, and a lotus-fountain garden you dine around by candlelight. Around 225 years old and still family-run, one of the loveliest heritage stays in the Pink City.
