The film

Why we love it

"A restored Indo-Portuguese garden villa in Saligao's quiet green lanes"

Some corners of Goa still keep their voice down. Saligao is one of them, a heritage village of Portuguese-era houses, church spires and lanes that wander under old trees, a short drive inland from the sand at Calangute and Baga. Brij Paraiso sits in this quiet: a 25-year-old Indo-Portuguese villa brought back to life by Brij Hotels in collaboration with Aditya Gupta. The brand calls it "A Garden Retreat Beyond the Crowds," and for once the line feels earned. This is Goa for people who would rather trade the beach-shack scramble for morning birdsong and a slow cup of coffee on a private terrace.

A house, not a hotel

There are just nine rooms, each named after a Goan village: Aldona, Moira, Parra, Bastora and their neighbours. They range from snug boltholes of around 250 sq ft to airy 800 sq ft retreats with twin terraces. The design language stays consistent throughout, built on arched doorways, vintage tiles, earthy colour washes and natural linens. Several rooms open onto private terraces or gardens, and a couple have outdoor showers screened by greenery. To my eye the palette of deep terracotta, olive and warm ochre reads more like a well-loved family home than a corporate boutique, which is precisely the point.

Saligao, slowly

Paraiso leans hard into the idea that the best of North Goa is found off the main road. The beaches are close, with Calangute, Candolim and Baga put at roughly ten to fifteen minutes, but the village itself is the draw. A guided Saligao Village Saunter threads through the lanes and ends with high tea in a preserved Indo-Portuguese home. There is a feni tasting led by the food and beverage team, birdwatching at the Agacaim mudflats, a plateau walk and picnic, and unhurried cycling through the surrounding greenery.

Goan flavour, homemade

Meals are Goan and largely made from scratch by in-house chefs using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Beyond the table, the kitchen doubles as a classroom: a spice-mixing class covering the Xacuti and Recheado blends that underpin Goan cooking, plus a more playful pizza-making session. Candlelit private dinners and a garden high tea round out a food-forward, home-cooked feel that suits the setting.

The quiet luxuries

The comforts here are deliberately understated rather than resort-scale: an outdoor pool set in the garden, a spa, common lounges and courtyards, complimentary bicycles, and yoga, with mats standard in every room. Rooms come with a complimentary minibar of artisanal refreshments and a daily delivery of handmade local treats. Wi-Fi, parking, a bar and room service are all on hand, and the villa is comfortable with families.

Who it's for

Paraiso will suit travellers who want Goa's texture — Portuguese architecture, village stories, cashew feni and slow mornings — without giving up a pool, a good bed and a short hop to the sand. It is small enough to feel private and personal, and it rewards the kind of guest happy to potter, cycle and eat well rather than chase a party. If your ideal Goa is a garden, a veranda and the sound of birds, this is a very persuasive base.
