Brijraj Bhawan Palace
Why we love it
"Two suites and five bedrooms in the 1830 British Agency Bungalow, where Queen Mary kept Christmas in 1911, above the Chambal at Civil Lines, Kota"
Brijraj Bhawan was built in 1830 by the East India Company, financed by Kotah state, as the house of the British Political Agent, and was known as the Agency Bungalow. In 1900 the Political Agent moved to Bharatpur and Kotah State took the building over as its guest house, renaming it Raj Bhawan. Lord Curzon stayed in 1902, Lord Reading and Lord Willingdon after him, and Queen Mary spent Christmas here in December 1911. A new wing facing the river was added in 1909 and forms the bulk of the hotel. The family took the house back in 1956, renamed it Brijraj Bhawan and opened it as a hotel in 1964; half of it is still their private residence.
There are two suites, four double bedrooms and a single, most of them looking over the river Chambal. The suites occupy what was the billiards room of the Agency Bungalow, set apart from the main house. The drawing room has a vaulted ceiling, a grand piano, oil paintings and old wildlife trophies. Food is served indoors or on the breakfast terrace and terrace gardens, with herbs and vegetables from the kitchen garden and milk from the Brijraj Bhawan dairy.
