Sher Bagh sits where the garden ends and tiger country begins. The Singh family has helped guard Ranthambhore for fifty years, and their camp is the old India of campaign furniture, canvas and firelight, with the mighty fort rising out of the forest beyond.
The camp. Twelve tented suites, each with an ensuite bathroom and a brass bathtub. The Machhli Suite, named for Ranthambhore's most famous tigress, whose territory once included this very ground, pairs two tents for families. The Royal Sher Suite is pure seclusion; the Imperial Raj Bagh, a two-bedroom hideaway, is the finest address in camp.
The days. Game drives into what may be the finest place on earth to see wild tigers, with leopard, sloth bear and three hundred bird species besides. Ramble up to the 8th-century Ranthambhore Fort, a UNESCO citadel above the treeline. Learn Junglee cooking around the campfire from the camp's own organic garden, visit the Dastkar village where local women keep Rajasthan's crafts alive, and end the day in the Jungle Spa, one of Tatler's 101 best in the world.
Getting there. The camp sits at the park's edge near Sawai Madhopur, with direct trains from Delhi and Jaipur.

SUJÁN Sher Bagh sits on the outskirts of Ranthambhore National Park in Rajasthan. Regular trains run from New Delhi, Mumbai and Agra to Sawai Madhopur Railway Station, a 25-minute drive from camp, while the drive from Jaipur airport (180 km) takes approximately 3 hours. Return transfers to Sawai Madhopur station are included in the nightly rate.
There are 12 tented suites with bespoke campaign-style furniture: Tented 'Jungle' Suites with brass bathtubs and open stone showers, the two-tent 'Machhli' Suite for families, the Royal 'Sher' Suite with private heated dip pool, and the two-bedroom Imperial 'Raj Bagh' Suite with its own pool deck.
Yes, the camp is open all year round. Check-in is from 2 pm and check-out by 12 noon, with a 2-night minimum stay, rising to 3 nights in the festive season.
The nightly rate for two includes accommodation, all meals, laundry, bottled mineral water, WiFi, 24-hour butler service, use of the gym and return transfers to Sawai Madhopur Railway Station. Park entrance fees and safaris into Ranthambhore National Park are excluded.
Established 25 years ago as India's first positive-impact safari camp, it evokes the glamorous 1920s style of living under canvas. Its drivers and guides have a combined 150 years' experience in Ranthambhore, and the Singh family has played a role in the reserve's conservation for the last 50 years.
The camp takes a farm-to-table approach, with daily menus built on seasonal produce from its own organic garden and local farmers — Anglo-Indian repasts by the campfire, plus a 'Junglee' cooking class at the outdoor kitchens.
