Connaught House
Why we love it
"A 1930s British villa in Mount Abu built for Jodhpur's last British Chief Minister, now the Maharaja's summer residence"
Connaught House is a British villa in a quiet fold of Mount Abu, which was once the summer capital of Rajputana. It was built for Sir Donald Field, Jodhpur's last British Chief Minister, in the 1930s and 1940s.
It is still a private residence: the summer residence of the Maharaja of Jodhpur, whose doors are opened to travellers rather than run as a hotel in the ordinary sense. The garden is the centre of the place.
As a base it works well. The Delwara Jain temples are the obvious excursion, Nakki Lake is a short drive, and the forests around Mount Abu are walkable from the house.
