Fateh Bagh

Rawla Koshilav stood on the Aravalli foothills near Jodhpur from 1802 and had become a neglected piece of heritage by the twentieth century. In 2002 around 65,000 pieces of the crumbling palace were carted to a site at Ranakpur, among orchards on the bank of a rain-fed river, and put back together as Fateh Bagh. HRH Group of Hotels, which runs it, calls this probably India's first attempt at relocating a fallen palace.

The rebuilt block is square and beige, with arched openings, intricately carved pillars and pavilions, domes and a fountain in the forecourt. Eighteen rooms sit inside it, seven suites and eleven deluxe, furnished with period pieces and ethnic decor.

The Restaurant is air conditioned and stands beside the garden, serving multi-cuisine lunches and dinners. The Bar opens at 11am with snacks and barbecue. Beyond them are a swimming pool, a walking trail into the orchards, table tennis, badminton and basketball, and the Panghat Spa for Ayurvedic and beauty treatments. Udaipur is 90km away; the Jain and Surya temples at Ranakpur are close by.
