Maharani Bagh means the queen's garden, and it was gifted in the nineteenth century to his Maharani by Maharaja Takhat Singh of Jodhpur.
It sits at the foot of the thickly forested Aravalli hills that divided the former kingdoms of Jodhpur and Udaipur, and it remains essentially a private forest. The accommodation is clusters of small cottages with gardens in bloom, set within the royal estate rather than arranged around a lobby.
The estate has wildlife of its own. Wild boar, sambhar and sloth bear are commonly sighted, and the fortunate get a glimpse of a leopard. A machaan overlooking the estate's waterbody gives a view over the hills and is the place to watch the birdlife.
New A relocated palace: in 2002 some 65,000 pieces of a crumbling 18th century palace were carried from near Jodhpur and rebuilt at Ranakpur, among orchards on a rain fed river. Eighteen rooms and suites, close to the Ranakpur Jain temples.
