Why we love it

"The big three, lived in rather than looked at"

The first-time India route, framed the way we would actually do it: live like a local while you tick off the big three. Your beds are a bed and breakfast in a leafy South Delhi colony, a family homestay two minutes' walk from the Taj, and a 160-year-old family haveli inside Jaipur's walled Pink City. You come home to neighbourhoods in the evening, not hotel districts.

The machinery is still taken care of. A private air-conditioned car and driver stay with you for the whole trip, you are met at the airport when you land, and in each city a local English-speaking guide joins you for a full day. Breakfast is included every morning, and it is what the neighbours are eating: parathas off the tawa before a day among the forts.

Enquire and our operator partner plans it around your dates. You book and pay them directly; Indiaesque never takes payment.

Best for
A first India that feels lived in, not toured
Day by day
  1. Day 1 · Arrive Delhi

Met at the airport and driven to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to land gently.

    Villa 33, Delhi
    Your home in Delhi
    Villa 33
    2 nights · Deluxe Room

A seven-room bed and breakfast in a large villa on a quiet, leafy street in South Delhi's Safdarjung colony: Victorian interiors with an Indian colonial touch, a sun terrace, a small in-house bar, balconies off the rooms, and the parathas at breakfast.

  2. Day 2 · Old and New Delhi

A full day with your guide. Old Delhi first: Raj Ghat, the Red Fort and a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk. Then the newer city: Qutub Minar, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Humayun's Tomb and the Lotus Temple.

  3. Day 3 · Delhi to Agra

Drive to Agra after breakfast. In the afternoon, Agra Fort and then the Taj Mahal with your guide, back to your hotel by evening.

    Coral House, Agra
    Your home in Agra
    Coral House
    1 night · Deluxe Room

Sanjay and Pratibha's family homestay, two minutes' walk from the Taj Mahal ticket window. He has been a professional guide and naturalist for twenty-five years; she dressed every room in tribal art, miniatures and period furniture. Their leafy garden has logged over forty species of birds.

  4. Day 4 · Agra to Jaipur

The road day: around six hours to the Pink City. Check in, then out again for the evening sound and light show at Amber Fort.

    Khatu Haveli, Jaipur
    Your home in Jaipur
    Khatu Haveli
    2 nights · Deluxe Room

A three-storey haveli wrapped around an internal courtyard, home to the Singh family for 160 years and deep inside the walled Pink City. Less a hotel than a family house that takes guests: the owners still sit down to dinner with them.

  5. Day 5 · Jaipur

A full day in Jaipur with your guide: past the Hawa Mahal, then the City Palace and its museum, and the Jantar Mantar observatory next door.

  6. Day 6 · Home via Delhi

After breakfast, the drive back to Delhi airport. Allow about six and a half hours.
