Ranvas
Why we love it
"Inside the walls of a fort first built in the 4th century, on the desert road that traders took to Delhi"
Ranvas lies within the walls of the fort at Nagaur, which the hotel dates to the fourth century, when the first walls went up as a mud fort built by the Nagavanshi kings. That makes it one of the oldest forts in the country.
Nagaur mattered because of where it stands. More than eight hundred years ago traders passed through carrying cargo across the Thar, and travellers, armies and generals who had crossed the desert from the west set out from here on the week long march to Delhi and the interior of India. It was the place you stopped.
Over the centuries the fort was held by the Rathores and by the Mughals, Akbar and Shah Jahan among them. The restoration has been recognised with a UNESCO award.
