Why we love it

"Nine suites in a late-1800s Rajput and European house on a 45-acre estate with two lakes, held by 18 generations, Shahpura, Bhilwara"

Shahpura was established in 1630 by the younger brother of the Maharaja of Udaipur and has passed through 18 generations of the same family. The house was built in the late 1800s in a mix of Rajput and European work, and its chandeliers, gothic windows and arched arcades are original. After Shahpura acceded to India in 1947 the family restored the building, and it opened as a hotel in 2006.

The estate covers 45 acres with two lakes and centuries old trees. There are nine suites in all: two Luxury Villa Suites beside the pool, each with a verandah, a courtyard and an outdoor shower; four Royal Suites; and three Suites. Each takes up to three guests. The pool is edged with lounge chairs and framed by trees. In winter meals are served outside, by the pool or under the stars, and in summer indoors, with Continental lunches and Indian dinners.

The estate arranges village walks with a village expert, boating, birdwatching, cycling and Phad painting demonstrations, and drives 12 km to Dhikola, a 400 year old fort the family has restored and lit, by way of the Ramdwara temple.
