Sukoon is one of four properties run by ABChapri Retreats, which works in Kerala and Kashmir. The boat is named for the Sufi word for a settled, contented state of mind. Its restoration kept the original carved wood panelling, ornate chandeliers, ceiling fans and pine floors, and set cream linen and coloured silks against them. Sukoon was the first houseboat in Kashmir fitted with a bio tank, so nothing is discharged into the lake; plastic is banned on board and drinking water is purified by reverse osmosis. It won the Outlook Traveller Boutique in India award in 2017.

There are five bedrooms. The Shalimar suite has a 160 sq ft bedroom with windows on both sides; four deluxe rooms of 140 sq ft are named Nishat, Pari Mahal, Mehtab Bagh and Chashma Shahi. Bathrooms have rainforest showers and bathtubs. Meals are served in the 290 sq ft dining room, which has walnut carved furniture and pine floors, or on the sun deck, Fizaa. The boat sits among floating lotus gardens with the Pir Panjal peaks behind.

Nadis calls itself a modern Kashmir house rather than a hotel: 18 large, sunlit rooms with cedar floors, carved ceilings and locally made furnishings, set in a big garden at Harwan village, opposite the public garden and a few kilometres from the Mughal gardens.
