In Hindi, khas means special, set apart. Khas Mahal Suites takes the word literally: it is a boutique all-suite hideaway from the Fateh Collection, on a quiet hill along Sisarma Road where nothing measures under 600 sq ft and every bed is a king.

Three suites, one idea

The whole hotel runs to three categories, and the differences are simple. The Heritage Chamber Suite, at 600 sq ft, takes a private balcony. The two 650 sq ft plunge-pool categories each take a private plunge pool, and one of them heats it, which matters more than it sounds in a Rajasthan winter. All three sleep up to three guests. Around them the hotel layers the small-property advantages: personal butler service, complimentary early check-in, a spa, a travel desk and a lift, with sister-property perks for direct bookers: a free visit to the vintage car museum at Fateh Vilas and 15 per cent off activities at Fateh Garh.

A retreat shaped by stillness and attention to detail

Dinner indoors or on the roof

There are two ways to eat. Indoors, a small restaurant with striped chairs, marble tables and handpicked artwork; on the roof, tables under lantern light with the Aravalli hills spread wide and bar service alongside each course. The location is the same trade as its sister properties: about 5 km from Udaipur's centre, roughly 20 minutes from the railway station, with pre-arranged airport transfers if you give a day's notice. We should be straight about what the record shows: this is a new and thinly documented property, its website offers no history and no suite count, and we have not stayed. But on paper, for a couple who want a pool of their own and no crowds at breakfast, it is the most tempting kind of unknown.
