Laalee

Laalee takes its name from the colour red, the word a lover uses for a beloved, a mother for a child and a devotee for the divine. The house was made by two co-creators: an award-winning Pichwai painter who is also its interior designer, and whose first job in Jaipur was with INTACH documenting the art and history of the old walled city, and a home chef who cooks from her family's heirloom recipes. Every room follows a theme from the life of Krishna, and every motif on the walls is hand painted by Rajasthani artists using a single hair brush and pigment paints.

There are nine rooms. Padma, the lotus room, took roughly 750 hours of painting. Diwali took around 630, with seven mirror workers hand cutting convex mirrors onto the ceiling and niches, and walls finished in gold and silver foil. Mayur carries peacocks, Gowdhuli the cows of Vrindavan, Utsav a gold infant Krishna on poinsettia red. The house at 22 Gopalbari also has a green garden, a plunge pool with a jacuzzi, reading corners, a library lounge, terraces and a cafe, and the kitchen is vegetarian.
