Sixty four rooms above Hanuman Ghat and the oldest rooftop pool in Udaipur, by the house's own telling. Dusk up there outshines the palace bars.
"The red-sandstone palace the Maharaja built to keep his guests"
His Highness Sir Ganga Singh commissioned Laxmi Niwas in 1904, the palace says, for two reasons: to give the townspeople work, and to build a residence worthy of the royal house of Bikaner. He supervised it himself, and the friezes, the near-perfect symmetry, the ornate filigree and the latticed screens are all put down to his eye. He was also, by the palace's own account, a famous host whose guests tended to overstay by months. Little has changed. The red sandstone still glows at dusk, the lawns still run out to the front gates, and a night here is a night inside the last age of the maharajas.
Some facilities and experiences may be chargeable.
The palace is on Dr. Karni Singhji Road, Bikaner 334001, Rajasthan. Junagadh Fort is a ten-minute walk away, and the hotel describes Bikaner's city centre and attractions as within walking distance.
It was built in 1904 by His Highness Sir Ganga Singh Ji, both to provide employment to the townspeople and to create a stately residence worthy of the royal house of Bikaner. The hotel preserves the aesthetic of 1937 — the year of King George's visit and the Second Durbar — from authentic chintz and original drapery to hand-painted walls and gilt-embossed gold panelling.
Four categories: Historical Suite, Royal Suite, Deluxe Room and Palace Room. Details range from twin images of Surya the Sun God on a Burma teak ceiling in the Royal Suite to canopied four-poster beds in the Palace Rooms.
Swarna Mahal is the restaurant beneath an usta-art, Burma teak-panelled roof, while Hari Mahal is the larger banquet-style dining room. The Trophy Bar is decorated with carefully selected spoils of royal hunts.
There is a swimming pool where, the hotel notes, viceroys took their post-prandial exercise, a billiards room, hard tennis courts to the south-west of the gardens, wellness facilities and the Rajat Mahal conference room, formerly a smoking room.
The hotel says booking directly through its website gets the best rates. Reservations are on +91-151-2200088 or reservation@laxminiwaspalace.com.

By enquiry A 14th-century walled fort near Ranthambhore, restored over more than a decade into 48 contemporary Rajasthani suites, with two palaces, two temples and a 30,000 square foot spa inside the ramparts.
By enquiry High above the ghats of the sacred Narmada, in the weaving town of Maheshwar, stands the 18th-century fort-palace of Ahilyabai Holkar — still in the family, and now opening its courtyards to a handful of guests. Nineteen rooms across six old buildings, three walled courtyards, a garden pool, and a daily table grown in the fort's own beds. One of central India's great stays.
