The film

Why we love it

"A 700-year-old Rajput fort, reborn as tiger country's grandest address"

Fort Barwara is what happens when a serious conservation project meets serious comfort. The Chauhan-built fort holds two palaces and two temples within its walls; its restorers spent over a decade waking it up, with Six Senses now at the helm, and opened in October 2021. Suites start at 753 square feet and climb to a tower-top pool suite named after the Raja who fought in the Second World War. Ranthambhore's tigers are half an hour away, which makes this the plush counterpoint to a safari camp: dawn in the park, back through the gates for a sommelier session in the Viewing Gallery and dinner under the stars at Shikar Burj. The spa alone occupies the original women's palace and both temples.

Maheshwar

High above the ghats of the sacred Narmada, in the weaving town of Maheshwar, stands the 18th-century fort-palace of Ahilyabai Holkar — still in the family, and now opening its courtyards to a handful of guests. Nineteen rooms across six old buildings, three walled courtyards, a garden pool, and a daily table grown in the fort's own beds. One of central India's great stays.
