By enquiry Pondicherry
A mansion-style stay in Pondicherry's French Quarter where whitewashed arches and high ceilings meet the salt-air bustle of the Tamil coast just outside the door.
"Four centuries of one family, one lakeside garh"
Rohet Garh is the flagship of the House of Rohet and the original article: the family's ancestral home since 1622, opened to guests in 1990 and restored without adding a single new building, by the house's own telling.
It sits on the banks of a lake amid farmland, all lawns, peacocks and painted gateways, with a pool ringed by stone pavilions where dinner is often served to live folk music. Bruce Chatwin and William Dalrymple each stayed months here writing, the family says, and the kitchen shaped by the late Thakurani Jayendra Kumari still anchors the whole experience.
Come for the frescoed rooms, stay for the village safaris the house says it pioneered in 1988 and rides on the family's Marwari horses.
Some facilities and experiences may be chargeable.
Restored rooms in the historic building with hand-painted walls and frescoed borders, furniture made in-house, a seating corner, safe and tea tray, and a modern bathroom. Views over the pool, garden or lake.
Six suites in the old building looking onto the garden or the lake. Hand-painted walls dressed with local textiles; the ones photographed show four-poster beds, antique chests and kilim rugs, with a separate sitting area and modern bathroom.

By enquiry A 13-room boutique hotel in Agra's Taj Nagri, built by three friends with deep roots in the city. Rooms borrow from the Taj's arches and inlay work, the kitchen serves family recipes from within 50 km, and the tours go where day-trippers never do.
