Rohet Garh is the flagship of the House of Rohet and the original article: the family's ancestral home since 1622, opened to guests in 1990 and restored without adding a single new building, by the house's own telling.
It sits on the banks of a lake amid farmland, all lawns, peacocks and painted gateways, with a pool ringed by stone pavilions where dinner is often served to live folk music. Bruce Chatwin and William Dalrymple each stayed months here writing, the family says, and the kitchen shaped by the late Thakurani Jayendra Kumari still anchors the whole experience.
Come for the frescoed rooms, stay for the village safaris the house says it pioneered in 1988 and rides on the family's Marwari horses.

There are thirty-two rooms including six suites, each unique with hand-painted frescoes and furniture designed in-house. The family has nurtured the property since 1990 with no new buildings added — old edifices have been redesigned instead.
Pioneered by the family in 1988, it is an excursion into rural Rajasthan where guests are welcomed into local homes — meeting the Bishnois, who have protected nature for more than 500 years, as well as Raika shepherds, Paliwal farmers and Meghwal weavers.
Yes — Rohet Garh has one of the finest Marwari horse stables in the country, from hour-long morning rides to six-day riding safaris through western Rajasthan with nights in luxury mobile tents. Basic riding ability is necessary and the best season is October to March.
The kitchens specialise in traditional Rajasthani cuisine, with chefs trained by the late Thakurani Sahiba Jayendra Kumari, author of Cuisine of Rohet Garh. Culinary workshops offer hands-on training, and dinner is often served poolside with folk musicians.
Bruce Chatwin and William Dalrymple practically lived at Rohet Garh for four to five months while working on The Songlines and City of Djinns.
