Why we love it

"Eight en-suite bedrooms in a 1932 Portuguese-Goan house restored over five years, with a fifteen-metre stone infinity pool on a 33,000 square foot estate, Pilerne, North Goa"

The plot passed to Joao Vicente Lobo in 1912, and the house on it was built in 1932 by Vincent Gaspar Lobo, who also once owned the Royal Hotel in Jabalpur. The present owners acquired the property in 2020 and spent five years restoring it, finishing in 2025, working with architects, conservators and craftsmen from Jeernodhar Conservators who treated the sal wood, prepared the lime plaster and laid the oxide and Kota stone floors.

The estate covers 33,000 square feet in Moica Vaddo, a hamlet of Pilerne village in Bardez, and the village is a protected wetland. Eight en-suite bedrooms are split between the main house, which holds five, the Presidential Suite cottage and the two-bedroom Twin Cottage. The main house rooms take their names from their coloured oxide floors, Quarto Amarelo in yellow, Quarto Verde in green, Quarto de Mar Azul in blue with a balcony over the pool.

A Piscina de Pedra runs fifteen metres in stone with a jacuzzi at its edge. Stained glass panels by The Glass Studio, Mumbai, carry the colours of the Pilerne paddy fields. Meals come from a permaculture garden of okra, amaranth and lemongrass and are served under the original sal wood beams in the Sala de Jantar.

Goa

In Aldona, inland North Goa, The Project Café has turned a 150-year-old Portuguese villa into an art-first boutique hotel with a pool, gallery, art bar and shop. Rooms are named after Goan places, and and, the hotel says outright, what catches your eye can be bought and taken home.

Goa · Restored heritage boutique hotel

Goa

A Portuguese house of around 1919 at Siridao bridge in Goa Velha, lovingly restored from 2014 by local artisans and reborn as a six-room boutique hotel. Expect a courtyard pool between red arcaded wings, a waterfront cafe with a pastry chef they say is Le Cordon Bleu certified, five resident dogs and the sort of quiet that North Goa's beach belt forgot.
