Why we love it

"Portuguese-Mediterranean architecture and courtyards in Calangute, a few minutes from the beach."

Villas tucked around a shimmering pool, as the resort's own pages put it, near Calangute Beach, the busiest strip in North Goa. Casa De Goa's trick is that contrast: Portuguese-Mediterranean architecture on the inside, the markets and cafés of Calangute close at hand. The resort styles itself a boutique 3-star, and its stated numbers are pleasantly small for the location: a couple of swimming pools, one restaurant, one bar.

Rooms that climb a clear ladder

The line-up runs from the 396 sq ft Deluxe Room, with private balcony, pool views and a bathtub, up through the pool-facing Suite to the 600 sq ft Villas tucked beside the water with open-plan living space, wooden floors and a dedicated butler. Both categories come with a Lavazza coffee machine and butler service, the Suite adds bathrobes, fruit and sweets on arrival and candle-light arrangements in the gazebos, and the hotel notes that children under ten are not accommodated in either. Families get their own answer instead: a 460 sq ft Family Suite with two interconnecting bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with twins, plus a private balcony. Breakfast is included across the board.

Comfort, connection, and some of the best resort facilities in North Goa.

That is the resort's own pitch on its homepage, and the pool-view balconies on the room pages bear out the easy, sociable mood it is selling.

Casita after dark

The in-house restaurant Casita runs from 7am to 11pm daily, backed by a Café Lounge cum Bar with coffees, teas and signature cocktails over the same hours, and room service for nights when the beach has taken everything out of you. One caution for the detail-minded: the site's own pages disagree on the room count, quoting 48 rooms in one place and 43 in another, so treat the exact tally loosely. Either way this is a compact resort by Calangute standards, and in our view that is precisely its appeal.

Goa

In Aldona, inland North Goa, The Project Café has turned a 150-year-old Portuguese villa into an art-first boutique hotel with a pool, gallery, art bar and shop. Rooms are named after Goan places, and and, the hotel says outright, what catches your eye can be bought and taken home.

Goa

A Portuguese house of around 1919 at Siridao bridge in Goa Velha, lovingly restored from 2014 by local artisans and reborn as a six-room boutique hotel. Expect a courtyard pool between red arcaded wings, a waterfront cafe with a pastry chef they say is Le Cordon Bleu certified, five resident dogs and the sort of quiet that North Goa's beach belt forgot.
