The property. Umaid Haveli calls itself "a piece of Royal Art and Design", and for once that is a description rather than a boast: the hotel was handcrafted and creatively painted by Rajasthan's expert artisans, pairing heritage architecture with modern rooms. It belongs to the Umaid Holiday Homes group.
The setting. You are at Kukas on the Delhi–Jaipur highway, about 20 minutes before Jaipur — 13 km from the main city on a straight six-lane highway, 10 minutes from Amber Fort, and a 4-hour drive from Delhi. The site sits amidst the Aravalli hills in a traffic-free, peaceful pocket with 360-degree views.
Eat and swim upstairs. The tenth floor holds the rooftop swimming pool and the Umaid Hill View multi-cuisine restaurant with wide hill views; downstairs, Umaid Maharaja — "The Kings Dine-in" — does Indian and Western food under painted ceilings hung with miniature paintings of Rajasthani kings. Spa therapy, a gym, lawn games and yoga packages round it out.

350 sq ft blending Rajasthani handwork and wall paintings with modern comforts: twin or queen bed, walnut-polished furniture, VRV air-conditioning, 32" LED TV, tea/coffee maker, mini fridge, rain-shower bathroom, and an extended indoor balcony; select rooms have garden or mountain views.
The premium tier at 450 sq ft, with handcrafted furniture and beautifully painted ceilings, placed for views of the hills and gardens. Queen bed, VRV air-conditioning, 32" LED TV, rain-shower bathroom, and extended indoor balcony seating with large recliners.
A classified heritage hotel at Rohet near Jodhpur, held by the same family since 1622 and receiving guests since 1990. Frescoed rooms, a courtyard pool, a family kitchen with its own cookbook, and a Marwari stable the family calls among the country's finest.

A Portuguese house of around 1919 at Siridao bridge in Goa Velha, lovingly restored from 2014 by local artisans and reborn as a six-room boutique hotel. Expect a courtyard pool between red arcaded wings, a waterfront cafe with a pastry chef they say is Le Cordon Bleu certified, five resident dogs and the sort of quiet that North Goa's beach belt forgot.
