Umaid Residency

Umaid Residency is the honest one. Where its Kukas neighbours dress up in four and five stars, this hotel calls itself what it is: a 3-star "Regal Heritage Home" from the Umaid group, built on the Jaipur heritage theme, and by its own account the first affordable property in the area. You are on the NH8 Delhi–Jaipur highway on the Amber side of the city, in a traffic-free pocket with ample parking, roughly 20 minutes from the Pink City, and you reach the forts without ever crossing the congested old town.

The rooftop pool is the treat

The newly added rooftop swimming pool faces the Aravalli hills, and it is the one indulgence in an otherwise sensible building. The 47 rooms come in three categories: Deluxe, Royal Deluxe (a double plus a single bed) and the Royal Family Suite with two double beds. All carry Rajasthani decor with practical kit: VRV air-conditioning that heats in winter, electric kettle, electronic safe, 32-inch HD TV, hot and cold showers. Stays include a fixed-menu breakfast, the daily paper and Wi-Fi, with late checkout to 1pm when the house allows.

Umaid Cafe and Restaurant serves Indian, Rajasthani and Chinese cooking in a room hung with 18th-century portraits and antique-style furniture. The desk downstairs runs desert village safaris, ticketing and pickups, and the group's 20 years of hotel-keeping show in the routines: 24-hour front desk, lift, full power backup.

Amber first, Delhi behind you

The geography is the argument. Amber Fort is 7 km, Jal Mahal 11 km, Jaigarh 15 km and Nahargarh 18 km, all on this side of the city, and Delhi is under four hours up NH8, which makes this a natural first night of a Rajasthan circuit: arrive from Delhi, do Amber and the northern forts from here, then drop into the Pink City with the crowds behind you.
