Things to Do in Jaipur

Jaipur keeps its sights close together: the three forts share one ridge north of the city, and the palace, observatory and bazaars all sit inside the walled grid. Two full days covers the headline monuments. A third day gets you into the workshops, the food and the quieter temples, which is where the city starts to feel like a place rather than a checklist.

Must-Do Experiences

Early Morning at Amber Fort

Arrive for opening, early in the morning, when the low sun is on the sandstone and the tour buses have not yet arrived. Spend 2-3 hours; the crowds and the heat both build from mid-morning.

Sunset from Nahargarh

The whole city spread below you, and the pink deepens as the sun drops. Bring snacks and stay through twilight, when the lights come on street by street.

Walk the Old City Bazaars

Johari Bazaar for jewels, Bapu Bazaar for textiles, Tripolia for bangles. Each street has its trade, so you shop by street rather than by shop, and walking them costs nothing.

Experience Chokhi Dhani

A recreated Rajasthani village with unlimited thali, folk performances, puppet shows, camel rides. Touristy, yes, but honestly good fun. Plan a whole evening for it.

Day Trips

The places to visit near Jaipur fall into two rings: an hour out, which fits into an afternoon, and three hours out, which takes the day or, better, a night.

Within an hour

Samode (40 km): a painted palace and the village below it, the Sheesh Mahal and Durbar Hall frescoed end to end. Sanganer (16 km): the block-printing and handmade-paper town, with workshops you can walk into. Bagru (30 km): the other block-printing village, quieter, with the mud-resist dabu work drying in the fields. Galtaji (10 km): the monkey temple in a gorge at the city's edge, tanks fed by a spring, best in the late afternoon.

Pushkar (3 hours)

Sacred lake, Brahma temple, hippie bazaar. Full day trip.

Ranthambore (3.5 hours)

Tiger safari. Requires overnight for proper experience.

Abhaneri (2 hours)

Chand Baori, one of India's deepest stepwells. Often combined with Fatehpur Sikri (on way to/from Agra).

Ajmer (2.5 hours)

Dargah shrine, Taragarh Fort. Can combine with Pushkar.
